The Titans are looking like a rounded team.
With training camp around the corner and a new season fast approaching, what are the Tennessee Titans working with this offseason?
It certainly appears that, unless something goes catastrophically wrong, Cam Ward will be the starting quarterback come September. This is honestly something everybody expects.
But what does he have to work with?
Offense: For those about to receive
For me, one of the real battles is for a shot at the coveted wide receiver positions. With typically six or seven included on a 53-man roster, the coaching staff will need to halve the current number before the season opener against the Denver Broncos.
Rookies Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike are up against the likes of Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett. And do not forget the hype around Xavier Restrepo, as well as the questions marks surrounding the productivity of Treylon Burks. These men have their work cut out and come the start of the season, I feel there will be some unexpected cuts.
Elsewhere on the offense, the addition of free agent Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle pushes J.C. Latham back to right tackle. This means we can capitalise on his experience at that position from his college days. Additionally, Peter Skoronski, who played left guard as a rookie, is expected to return to that position.
Defense: Looking good
Defensively, things seem to be sitting pretty so far with no major issues to report. The team’s powerhouse duo of Jeffery Simmons and T’Vondre Sweat are aiming for an even better year than last season.
Sebastian Joseph-Day is also doing well at camp and for a defensive line that is considered a strength, I am hoping they improve on last year’s overall ranking of 14th by Pro Football Focus.
The one possible cause for concern is at edge, with Arden Key the only established player there. Veterans Dre’Mont Jones and Lorenzo Carter, as well as the rookies, are all going to need to step it up as their improvement will be crucial.
The Titans’ first preseason game is on 9 August against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so there is still time to iron out any kinks and get this team ready to dominate.
