The Saints cannot go wrong at the NFL Draft, right?

The New Orleans Saints cannot really do wrong in this draft.

I mean, they can. We have seen it before. You do not have to go back far to see some real corkers in Saints’ draft history… Marcus Davenport for two first rounders anyone?

But this year, they have needs everywhere. It is difficult to take a bad player in this year’s draft at number nine, the Saints’ first round pick.

It is the first year of a Kellen Moore offense. But how much control will General Manager Mickey Loomis hand over to Moore come Thursday night?

The Saints have an unusually large number of picks. It is not unusual for most teams, but it is distinctly unusual for New Orleans.

Will Loomis manage to control himself and not give away future picks? Only time will tell.

A betting man would wager even if Mickey sticks at nine in the first round, he will want to package some of the later round picks to move up from their second pick at 40.

Please, not a quarterback

The first pick should not be a quarterback. Unless Cam Ward falls that far – I would roll naked along the length of Bourbon Street if he does – then there is no quarterback in this draft that should go as high as pick nine.

There are game changers everywhere that should be under consideration, and many will still be there after the eighth pick.

Mason Graham? Yes please. Tyler Warren? Don’t mind if I do. Ashton Jeanty? AK41 and Jeanty in the backfield has to be fun right?

Just do not reach for a quarterback because Derek Carr is… well, let us move swiftly on.

The trenches need some serious work. But would you really take umbrage with Moore having his choice of game changing player in the first round?

This is a new Saints era. Moore can do anything he wants until he shows me he cannot be trusted. In the meantime, fill your boots.

Pick two

So this is where I do not mind Mickey being Mickey. You want to package a second and a third to move up to get the quarterback that Kellen wants? Go for it. Just do not do anything with next year’s picks. For the removal of all doubt, do not touch that first round pick in 2026.

Expect 2025 to be a tough season for the black and gold. I would not be at all surprised to see us picking even higher than this year. The 2026 quarterback class? Much better. I will take a high pick in that draft please.

So Mickey, do what you do. Move back up into the first round and get Kellen’s quarterback. I would prefer it not to be Shedeur.

I just do not see him as the guy who can lead a team in the huddle; to have people go to war for him. He seems too entitled. There is no ‘he’ in ‘team’, but there is in ‘Shedeur’, and it is not what this team needs.

Jaxson Dart? Tyler Shough? If Kellen thinks he has his guy, I am with him until the wheels fall off.

Beyond

There is a lot of talent in this draft. If Mickey has not given away all our picks, this could be a great draft for the Saints. But that is exactly what it needs to be to get this team facing in the right direction.

They can do it. Look at 2006. Look at 2017. When we hit, we hit big. But consistency? Well, that would be a lovely thing.

Roll on Thursday night.
