The NFL is sleeping on Seattle once again this year

Sleepless in Seattle was a huge hit in 1993.

But it seems sleeping on Seattle is still all the rage in 2025.

The Seahawks were decent last year, and improved over the offseason. So why do bookies and pundits alike predict the Seahawks will finish last in the NFC West?

Last year, the Seahawks had a rookie head coach, Ryan Grubb as offensive co-ordinator and awful offensive line play.

They still won 10 games and missed out on the playoffs on the fifth tiebreaker.

There was already a lot to build on here.

Much-needed scheme change

The biggest change this year should be the offensive scheme and play-calling.

Klint Kubiak’s scheme in New Orleans worked beautifully until their entire offense got injured.

Seahawks fans are rightly excited Kubiak that might even decide to run the ball more than 14 times a game, or target the team’s best receivers?

“Houston, we have an O-line”

The more balanced scheme will also benefit Seattle’s young offensive line.

Their opponents will have to actually respect the Seahawks’ run game now, while the use of a full back should make blocking assignments easier.

Abe Lucas is fit, Grey Zabel should shine as a rookie and Anthony Bradford looks like he could finally put it all together in 2025.

The big weakness could quickly become a strength for Seattle.

Better edge rotation

New signing DeMarcus Lawrence and a fit Uchenna Nwosu will make a huge difference for Seattle.

Last year, Derick Hall and Boye Mafe started the year with a flurry of sacks.

But over-use meant their production dipped late in the season. With a better rotation, Seattle’s edge production should skyrocket.

No need to panic

It is clear the Seahawks have downgraded at wide receiver and quarterback.

I wanted DK Metcalf and Geno Smith to stay in Seattle. But their loss will not have the impact it would have last season.

The Seahawks will use their full back and tight ends more this season. Sam Darnold should not have to throw the ball 56 times in a match.

They will not miss Smith as much as I feared.

Weak schedule

Seattle also has an easy schedule this year. There are no clashes with the Eagles or Lions, and they have avoided the Chiefs, Ravens and Bills.

The NFC South and AFC South are not the strongest. The Seahawks take on both divisions in full.

The NFC West itself is also less of a gauntlet than in recent years.

Seattle should be targeting a positive divisional record in 2025.

A bold prediction

Everyone loves a bold prediction, so here goes… Contrary to the lowly expectations around the league, this will be a successful season for Seattle.

The Seahawks will win the NFC West and secure a home Wild Card game!
