Sean McVay’s Week 1 records that bode well for Rams

The Rams face the Houston Texans to open the 2025 season.

Before the game, the Rams announced that quarterback Matthew Stafford would be ready to play despite missing a month of training camp due to an aggravated disc in his back.

But that is not the only positive news for the Rams.

Sean McVay boasts two impressive records that could give his team an advantage over the Texans this Sunday.

McVay’s opening day record

It will be McVay’s ninth year as head coach of the Rams. The 39-year-old, who led LA to its first Super Bowl in 22 years in 2021, has an impressive record on opening day.

Under McVay, the have Rams started 5-0 in season openers. They have since gone 1-2, giving them a total record of 6-2.

Interestingly, McVay’s first four season openers were against teams that missed the playoffs the previous season. However, since then, the Rams have opened every season against a playoff team. The Texans are the fifth such opponent in a row.

In the Rams’ two season-opening losses under McVay, only one was in regulation time. The impressive 2024 Detroit Lions needed overtime to beat LA last year.

A Super Bowl hangover to start the 2022 season resulted in the Josh Allen-led Buffalo Bills dismantling the Rams 31-10, marking McVay’s biggest opening-game loss.

Since 2017, the Rams have defeated the Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks in campaign curtain raisers.

McVay vs. the Texans

The Rams have faced the Texans twice in the regular season since McVay became head coach in 2017. Both times, the Rams have easily secured victory.

The first encounter was in that first year, with the Rams winning 33-7. Wide receiver Robert Woods caught eight passes, including two touchdowns, and totaled 171 yards.

The second meeting occurred in 2021, with the Rams racing to a 38-0 lead. They rested their starters for the fourth quarter, allowing the Texans to score 22 points.

Stafford threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns that day, while Cooper Kupp had seven receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.
