What a start for the Colts.
The Indianapolis Colts got their season off to the best possible way. They defeated the Miami Dolphins by a blowout score of 33-8 in as dominant performance as you are likely to see.
In truth, the game was not really close as the Colts did not let the Dolphins get a foothold in the game. On top of that, the Colts became the first team to score on every possession of a game since at least 1978, per NFL. It was also the team’s first opening day win since 2013!
And boy, did coach Shane Steichen need that victory after a tumultuous summer dominated by the well-documented quarterback battle.
His selection came through for him though, with Daniel Jones recording a stat line of 22 from 29 for 272 yards, one touchdown plus two rushing touchdowns.
First-round draft pick Tyler Warren looked immense as well. The Colts look like they might have an answer to a longstanding problem position at tight end. It really was as perfect a day as the Indianapolis Colts could have hoped for.
New-look defense
There were other changes made this offseason in Indianapolis. One of the biggest acquisitions was new Defensive Coordinator, Lou Anarumo. Although Daniel Jones quite rightly takes a lot of the headlines for his performance this weekend, it was the new DC’s defense that came up clutch as well.
They had three takeaways against the Miami Dolphins’ offense, which the Colts converted into 17 points. This included an interception from defensive end Laiatu Latu.
It goes without saying, but it really does make a huge difference. You could see the effect it had on the offense. It gave Shane Steichen the confidence to call the plays he wanted, knowing that they could potentially get the ball back for him. This included going for it on fourth down on a couple of occasions. It really was great to watch.
Fool’s gold or real deal?
However, as good as the Colts were – and believe me, they were really good on Sunday – the Dolphins did not have their best day. Take nothing away from Indianapolis, you can only beat the team you are playing, but it does feel like tougher tests lie ahead. You can read more about the Miami performance here with HuddleUK’s resident Dolphins writer Lee’s take.
Fans now want to know whether this team could be a real force this year. Much has been said in the offseason about Indianapolis, and there did not seem much optimism from NFL fans in general.
HuddleUK ran an offseason poll on who would win the AFC South. The Colts finished in last place. My personal opinion has been resolute throughout. This is a good roster and one that can compete, even more so if they can get some consistency at quarterback.
Tougher tests ahead
It is always said that you should not read too much into Week 1 (even if it is a record-breaking one!). This leads me on to next weekend.
The Colts’ match-up this Sunday is against the Denver Broncos, who should provide them with a much sterner test. The game is in the ‘later’ window with a 21.05 UK time kick-off, so could have more eyes on it than usual.
The Broncos have got a great defense and a good offense, and are coached brilliantly by Sean Payton. It will be interesting to see this contest.
Prior to the season, it was a game I had my eye on. I did think that it would be one that the Colts could struggle in. However, after the performance they put in last Sunday, I cannot wait to see how they match up against a much tougher test.
For the first time in a long time, the vibes around Lucas Oil Stadium are good. I, for one, really hope that it continues that way.
