Raiders beat themselves in Week 2 defeat

Division defeat for the Raiders.

Week 2 brought the Raiders’ first divisional match-up of the season on Monday night, and fell 20–9 to the Los Angeles Chargers.

At first glance, you might think it was a normal “playoff team beats rebuilding team” scenario.

But honestly? I think the Raiders mostly beat themselves, and the Chargers just watched it happen.

Defensive flashes

After Week 1 and the preseason, most people said the offense looked good but the defense might struggle.

With so many new and young pieces, that concern made sense.

This game, though, felt more “bend but do not break”. Obvious issues remain, but some players really stood out.

Maxx Crosby continues to be the centre of the defense. He had a tackle for loss and forced a fumble on Omarion Hampton late in the game.

Jonah Laulu was impressive too, with two sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Offensive disaster

Geno, Geno, Geno… what are we doing here?

After a great start last week, Week 2 was rough. He had three interceptions, including one on the very first play.

Part of it shows the lack of rhythm with other wide receivers. Brock Bowers is not yet fully fit, either.

There were no completions over 10 yards from 12 attempts. That just shows there is still a lot of work to do with this offense.

O-line and Ashton Jeanty

The offensive line had a rough game.

They consistently allowed pressure on Geno, leaving him with almost no clean pockets. The run game was not much better.

Ashton Jeanty did flash some brilliance, especially after contact. A few more games like this and we will see why he was drafted so highly.

The young running back still has work to do, but his vision and determination are clear. He could really skyrocket with experience.

Looking ahead

So, where do we go from here?

This loss hurts, but it is not the end of the world. The Raiders still have pieces that can turn this around.

The defense showed flashes, the O-line needs work and Geno just needs to get back in rhythm with the receivers.

If Brock Bowers stays healthy and Ashton Jeanty keeps making plays, the offense could finally start clicking.

It is early, the season is long and there is plenty of room to grow.

I am hoping the Raiders learn from this one, tighten up the mistakes and come back stronger in Week 3.
