New blood, old wisdom: Patriots’ rebuild might just work

It has been a while since we saw meaningful Patriots football.

However, the offseason has been as active as it can be without a ball being snapped.

These are my favourite moves the New England Patriots have made this offseason.

Experienced coaching staff

After a failed experiment in Jerod Mayo and first-time playcallers Alex van Pelt and DeMarcus Covington, the Patriots have hired an infinitely more experienced coaching staff in Mike Vrabel, Josh McDaniels and Terrell Williams.

These coaches have all been in the NFL a long time and are more likely – and better qualified – to maximise the Patriots’ roster.

Investing in the trenches

The offensive and defensive line have been key areas of investment for the Patriots this offseason, both of which were weaknesses a season ago.

Mike Onwenu is likely to be the only remaining starter from last year’s offensive line. The 2024 campaign saw the Pats’ big men ranked dead last in run blocking and 31st in pass blocking.

Overhauling both sides of the line was a must, as the Patriots also ranked poorly in pass rush (28th) and run defence (26th).

Adding key signings like Harold Landry, Milton Williams and K’Lavon Chaisson to join Keion White and Christian Barmore gets me rather giddy!

Adding a number one

It is no secret that the Patriots’ wide receiver room did not strike fear into the hearts of opposing defences. This is, in my opinion, because it was a room full of Robins who lacked a Batman.

By this, I mean that players like ‘Pop’ Douglas and Kayshon Boutte are good weapons to have on your roster, but they are not true number ones.

They need someone to demand the defence’s attention from snap to snap, so they can fill their respective roles on the team.

I believe Stefon Diggs can be the Batman this team needs. Ker-pow!
