Who will come out on top in these key battles?
As the Miami Dolphins gear up for the 2025 NFL season, several key position battles are set to unfold during training camp.
These competitions will be crucial in shaping the team’s roster and depth chart.
As Fins fans the world over will admit, depth –or rather the lack of it – has hurt the team significantly during Mike McDaniel’s tenure.
Cornerback: Cam Smith vs. Storm Duck vs. Jason Marshall Jr.
With the looming departure of veteran Jalen Ramsey, the cornerback position is wide open. Cam Smith and Storm Duck are leading contenders, with Jason Marshall Jr. also in the mix.
This trio is expected to vie for starting roles in the secondary. However, there is a clear need for a veteran leader in the group, once Ramsey moves on.
Without doubt, this is the weakest area on the team.
Running back: Alexander Mattison vs. Ollie Gordon II
Alexander Mattison, a recent addition to the Dolphins, faces competition from rookie Ollie Gordon II.
Gordon’s physical running style could earn him significant playing time in short yardage, potentially challenging Mattison for the third running back spot on the depth chart.
Offensive line: Patrick Paul vs. Larry Borom
Following Terron Armstead’s retirement, the left tackle position is up for grabs.
Second-year player Patrick Paul and veteran Larry Borom are expected to compete for the starting role, making this a pivotal battle to watch.
Paul has the tools and has showed glimpses of talent in limited play. Borom is not expected to win this battle but could be an interesting depth piece.
Tight end: Pharaoh Brown vs. Julian Hill vs. Jalin Conyers
With Jonnu Smith’s future uncertain amid trade discussions, the tight end position could see new faces emerge.
Pharaoh Brown, known for his blocking prowess, Julian Hill – mostly known for drive-killing penalties and key drops – and undrafted rookie Jalin Conyers are among those competing for roster spots.
Ideally, Miami will find a way to pay Smith, who became a key figure for the last 10 weeks of last season.
Punter: Jake Bailey vs. Ryan Stonehouse
Special teams will feature a competition between punters Jake Bailey and Ryan Stonehouse.
Both bring unique skills to the table and their performance in training camp will determine who secures the role.
Miami’s Special Teams are not special at all, in any way. A massive improvement is required to bring the unit up to even mid-tier in the NFL.
While hoping the punter will be underused, this is a key training camp battle, with no clear front runner.
