A much-needed win for KC.
The Kansas City Chiefs tamed the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football in dominant fashion by a score of 30-17.
Below we will dissect the key talking points from the game.
MVP Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes continued his excellent start to the season.
Mahomes, against albeit a banged up Detroit secondary, laid down his marker as one of the front runners for MVP.
Mahomes went 22-30 for 257 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 30 yards and a score.
Compiling his second game of accounting for four touchdowns this season. Mahomes touchdown at the end of the first half gave the Chiefs a 13-10 lead, one they would not relinquish.
The Chiefs signal caller over his last three games has amassed 933 yards and 10 total touchdowns. MVP level production from the Chiefs quarterback.
Jaylon Moore bebut
Jaylon Moore – making his season debut at left tackle in the place of the unavailable Josh Simmons – had an assured performance.
Despite a late sack allowed, Moore allowed just three pressures on 40 pass-blocking snaps. This even more impressive given he was lining up against Aidan Hutchinson, one of the best pass rushers in the NFL.
With the Chiefs without Simmons at least for the short term, the Chiefs now know they have a reliable replacement who can step in when needed.
Shoutout to Moore for not only a great performance but for welcoming his third child on the eve of the game.
Chiefs defensive masterclass
Steve Spagnuolo once again cooked up an excellent defensive gameplan.
The Chiefs defense limited All Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to just 45 yards and Jameson Williams to 66 yards and a score.
Despite struggling to stop the run in the first half, the Chiefs bottled up the Lions’ explosive rushing attack in the second half. Allowing just 98 yards on the ground on 23 carries.
Spagnuolo’s half-time adjustments stifled the Lions attack with excellent execution. The Chiefs linebacker core of Drue Tranquil, Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal played especially well.
Chenal in particular flashed his athleticism and strength bursting through the Lions offensive line on numerous occasions to halt drives.
The Chiefs’ victory over the Lions was not just another regular-season win. It was a statement.
With Patrick Mahomes once again proving why he is the gold standard at quarterback, a next-man-up mentality from players like Moore, and a defense firing on all cylinders under Spagnuolo, Kansas City reminded the league why they remain the team to beat.
Now with their number one wide receiver Rashee Rice returning off suspension, the Chiefs may just be the team to beat in the AFC once again.
