Anyone else getting a sense of déjà vu?
After a pulsating 40-40 tie against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys had the number one ranked offense in football.
In the aftermath of another crazy Cowboys home game, I could not help but think that Dallas are going to waste another career of a top-level quarterback.
Dak Prescott had another tremendous showing to add to an impressive start to the season.
Missing 60% of the starting offensive line and his favourite target wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, the Cowboys were on a hiding to nothing against a heavily favoured Green Bay Packers.
Prescott masterfully led the offense and negated the Packers pass rush that contained a familiar face through expert pocket positioning and awareness.
Putting up 40 points at home should lead to a win every week in the NFL.
Prescott being held back
Sadly, to go with the number one ranked offence, the Cowboys have the 32nd-ranked defence in yards per game.
A classic case of ying and yang. However, in this instance, instead of creating a dynamic whole, it is creating a middle of the road football team.
For Dak Prescott, now in his 10th year in the NFL, his career is mirroring his predecessor Tony Romo.
Prescott was a fourth round draft pick in 2016 and the Cowboys hoped he would sit behind Romo for the final years of his career. If they were lucky when Romo retired, Prescott would be prepared to step in and take over.
Prescott was thrust into the starting role after Romo went down injured in the 2016 preseason. Prescott never gave the job back and he has performed way beyond his draft position in the decade since.
Romo was perennially towards the top of the quarterback stats list throughout his career in the NFL but often let down by the lack of a running game or defense, usually both.
Romo would put the team on his back, repeatedly dragging them to be competitive despite the team’s overall deficiencies.
This 2025 season is playing out much the same for the Cowboys. Unless the defense can drag itself off the floor and improve quickly, the Cowboys are going to drift to a 9-8 record at best.
Based on the first month of the season, it will at least be fun and betting the ‘over’ on Cowboys games could be very profitable for you.
