Colts go camping… and aura farming

The Indianapolis Colts began training camp this week.

The team start their preparations for the new season going into 2025. After four days of camp, today, we take a look at things so far. Which players have caught the eye? What are the far-too-early takeaways? And what on earth is ‘aura farming’?

Below is a summary of the storylines gathered from following via social media and team released clips. Unfortunately, I am not able to be there myself!

However, let us look at what has been happening this week as the Colts set up their new year, with the hope of surprising a few people.

New year, new faces

One of the most exciting things about any new season are the new faces, whether that is incoming coaches or free agency signings. It is also your first chance to look at your draft picks in detail.

That is no different for the Indianapolis Colts, who have a host of new faces in all of those areas. As well as new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, there are also big free agency signings in Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, not to mention the highly heralded first round pick, Tyler Warren.

It appears that Anarumo’s new scheme is going to be heavily focused on defensive backs. The training camp this week has done nothing to dampen those expectations. The defensive back group had one of the stronger showings from what I have heard.

Big shout-outs go to Ward, who has shone in one-on-ones against veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. But most excitingly has to be third round pick Justin Walley.

A bit of a surprise taken at pick 82 in this year’s draft, the defensive back from Minnesota has been taking first team reps opposite Ward. This puts him ahead of veterans JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones. He is definitely one to watch moving forwards.

First-round pick and aura

Highly heralded first-round pick Tyler Warren has shown some glimpses of what made him so highly sought after this spring. He is a player that Colts fans are hoping will really open up the offensive playbook this year.

Next up, aura farming, a phrase that is relatively new to me. For those of you not in the know, it is essentially some form of dance move that has gone viral via social media. And the Colts got to see their very own dancing safety, Cam Bynum, perform this move.

After snagging an interception from head coach Shane Steichen – yes, you read that right, Coach Steichen threw an interception – Bynam returned if for a score. He then led the team in the viral canoe ‘aura farming’ dance.

Quarterback battle

And last, but not least I suppose, we had better talk about the quarterbacks.

For those of you who have been hiding under a rock, Indy are having a true quarterback battle. So far, both Anthony Richardson Senior, the current incumbent, and new signing Daniel Jones have shared first team reps.

From what I have read and seen online, so far, it is very difficult to say who has the edge. This is one to watch moving forward.

General manager Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen have both said they will not be rushed into making a decision. We will have to wait a little longer to see who will be starting under center for Indianapolis when the new season gets underway in September, at Lucas Oil Stadium, against the Miami Dolphins.

I cannot wait. It is great to have football back.
