Cardinals’ hopes dwindle after five-game skid

The Arizona Cardinals’ season has taken a sharp downturn.

After starting a promising 2-0, the team has now stumbled into a five-game losing streak. This has dropped their record to a disappointing 2-5 and leaves them at the bottom of the NFC West.

Despite the presence of star tight end Trey McBride and developing second-year wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the offfense ranks in the bottom third of the league in both passing and scoring.

Compounding the offensive struggles is the significant loss of running back James Conner for the year due to injury. This has further strained the rushing attack.

All of those five losses came from late scores in the fourth quarter. Four of them came from walk-off field goals.

That sort of run of luck is not just coincidence. It is something that needs to be addressed this week, if the season is to offer any hope.

Is Kyler a potential trade candidate?

The daunting schedule ahead includes divisional match-ups and a Monday night showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. Now, the conversation in Arizona has shifted from playoff contention to being a potential “seller” at the trade deadline.

The team’s immediate future hinges on snapping this losing streak to keep any long-shot playoff hopes alive.

Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett has started the last two games, in place of the injured Kyler Murray. Despite impressive performances from him, it was widely expected that Murray would return for the game in Texas.

However, recent rumours and inconsistent comments from Jonathan Gannon have fuelled speculation that Arizona’s franchise quarterback could be traded away by Tuesday’s deadline.

Time to look ahead to 2026

After the absolute disaster that Arizona have been through in the last few weeks, it is hard not to think that this season is best forgotten already.

Looking on the positive side, they have stayed in every game so far this season and the defense has kept things tight.

Linebacker Josh Sweat, an offseason addition from the Philadelphia Eagles, has shown plenty of promise with two forced fumbles and five sacks so far.
