Training camp battles for the New York Giants

What I am watching for in training camp.

Training camp starts this week for the New York Football Giants and while none of us are realistically thinking we can get to the playoffs this season, it does feel like we are forming an identity.

Young, hungry and tough to beat, while remaining competitive until the very last snap of each game.

This competitiveness will start during training camp, with lots of interesting battles taking place and fights for starting jobs and roster spots.

Here are a few things I will be looking out for this training camp.

The quarterback battle

All the reports state that head coach Brian Daboll is in love with Jaxson Dart, it seems as if he finally has his guy.

It will be interesting to hear how Dart is performing in training camp drills, the joint practices with the New York Jets and also his showing in pre-season games. Could he win the back-up job from Jameis Winston or even do enough to prove he deserves to be a starter from Week 1?

Normally there is so much hype and expectation around a first round pick, especially at the quarterback position, however with the Giants adding Abdul Carter with the third overall pick, all focus seems on Carter at the moment.

This feels like there will be far less pressure from fans to want Dart thrown in too early, but should he light it up in training camp and pre season, why not consider him?

Evan Neal

Evan Neal has been nothing short of a massive disappointment, he has been poor on the field and he has been very injury prone and even had a pop at the fans for slating him.

This is the last year of his rookie deal and we finally have decided to switch him to playing guard.

If Neal works out at guard and can win the job off of 35-year-old Greg van Roten, then there might be a chance to salvage something out of the pick.

Erik Flowers and Mekhi Becton are recent examples of failed first round picks that became serviceable guards in this league. Let us hope the same can happen for Neal and he even gets a second contract with the team.

Defensive line

All the excitement for the Giants this season starts with their defensive line, reminding us of the glory years of elite pass rushers.

Can Abdul Carter beat out Kayvon Thibodeaux to gain more snaps in Week 1 and for the rest of the season?

And who will win the starting defensive tackle job along side Dexter Lawrence?

A new UDFA legend?

Every year we all find an Undrafted Free Agent who becomes a fan favourite out of nowhere.

I would think with the lack of depth at the wide receiver position this season it will come from there, but I look forward to seeing who emerges this year.

The 2025 season upon us, we made it!

  1. Good to sed a Giants post again. With Russell Wilson confirmed as started QB Jaxson Dart may only get a starter role for a pre season game – let’s wait and see! Personally never been a RW fan and have liked the look of JD since the combines. Give me Greg van Roten over Evan Neal any day.
