Chiefs make the smart and necessary draft picks

The Chiefs used the draft to address their weaknesses and make some predictable but necessary picks.

The Kansas City Chiefs offence was put under tremendous pressure during the final game of the season.

Six sacks from the Philadelphia Eagles in that Super Bowl loss left Chiefs fans watching from behind cushions and sofas!

The 40-22 loss was a far cry from the historical victory that Chiefs Kingdom was expecting. Criticism of the players, coaches and a certain blonde singer have been rife ever since.

Focus on the O-line

Going into next season, the focus has to be on protecting Mahomes. As a result, Kansas City knew they needed to strengthen their offensive line.

Before the draft, motions were made to ensure that General Manager Brett Veach and Head Coach Andy Reid would address this concern.

Despite retaining right guard Trey Smith, the Chiefs traded left guard Joe Thuney, a move which surprised a few.

However, in Round 1 of the draft, the Chiefs predictably selected Josh Simmons. Despite a knee injury that prematurely ended his 2024 season, the Ohio State left tackle was high on many fans’ radars.

This pick was given As and Bs by many analysts and pundits, and was largely what Chiefs fans (me included!) expected.

Other picks well received

The team’s other selections left NFL fans feeling like the Chiefs pulled something special out of the bag yet again.

Round 4 pick Jalen Royals from Utah State is a case in point. At six foot and 205lbs, the receiver brings size and surprising speed, providing a physical presence to the offence.

Their work over the three days in Green Bay has been met with widespread praise and approval. From defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott to defensive end Ashton Gillotte, the draft addresses many of the concerns raised by Chiefs Kingdom.

So while Eagles fans dream of a return to the Super Bowl, the humbled Chiefs have been quietly putting in the work. No doubt, they will be ready and raring to go in the pre-season!
